What it can do
With Find My turned on, a missing iPhone can be:
- Found on a map, with directions to its approximate location in the Find My app.
- Made to play a sound to find it nearby, even when it is on silent.
- Protected with Lost Mode, which locks the iPhone, suspends Apple Pay payment cards and passes, and shows a message and contact number on the screen.
- Erased remotely, removing the personal data on it, if it cannot be recovered.
The Find My network can also help locate an offline iPhone using nearby Apple devices.
Getting ready in advance
Find My must be turned on before the iPhone goes missing. Turning it on takes a minute:
- Open Settings on the iPhone and tap the name at the top.
- Tap Find My, then Find My iPhone.
- Turn on Find My iPhone.
- Turn on Find My network to help locate the iPhone even when it is offline.
- Turn on Send Last Location so that the iPhone sends its location to Apple when the battery is critically low.
Where to find it in Kiren
Open Kiren, swipe to Activity, and tap Device Health. Then tap Lost Device Protection, subtitled "Find, lock or erase your device".
Tap Learn about Find Devices to open Apple's guidance.
To find a missing iPhone, open find-device.kiren.com/ios in a browser on another phone, tablet, or computer. Kiren keeps this link pointing to Apple's device-finding service. Bookmarking it makes it easy to find when it is needed.
If the iPhone goes missing
- Open find-device.kiren.com/ios in a browser and sign in with the Apple Account used on the missing iPhone. The Find My app on another Apple device signed in to the same account works as well.
- Select the iPhone to check its location.
- If it seems to be nearby, choose Play Sound.
- If it cannot be found right away, turn on Lost Mode. Add a contact number and a message to help whoever finds it get in touch.
- If it cannot be recovered, erase it remotely. Try the other recovery options first: erasing cannot be undone.
For detailed instructions, see Apple's guide to finding a lost iPhone.
Good to know
- Protection can be requested while the iPhone is offline. Lost Mode and remote erasure take effect when it next turns on and connects to Wi-Fi or mobile data.
- An erased iPhone should stay in Find My. This preserves Activation Lock, which helps prevent someone else from using it.
- A passcode should stay set on the iPhone. Device Health helps check this. See Device Health (iOS).
- The iPhone should stay signed in to the Apple Account. Signing out turns off Find My on that iPhone. The account password should be kept private.
